About the Entity Viewer app

The Entity Viewer app provides a web-based interface for real-time monitoring, investigation, and analysis of entities tracked in Obcerv. Its customizable view lets you group, filter, and navigate from a high-level overview to a more detailed view of entities, all within a single intuitive interface.

Entity Viewer and the Geneos Active Console Copied

The Entity Viewer app replaces some of the functionalities of the Geneos Active Console, but not all. The Entity Viewer app can be used by most Geneos users for their day-to-day monitoring and operational needs, while the Active Console remains the tool for admins and power users.

The table below is not intended to be a full list of feature comparison, instead it is used to highlight the differences in the two components.

Entity Viewer page Copied

The Entity Viewer page provides a single pane from which you can check the status of your IT estate. Entities that you choose to monitor are conveniently grouped on this page.

You can quickly view context groups and entities with real-time severity changes. As updates are received, summary statistics and chip or tile colors change accordingly.

Add a new context group Copied

Define groupings and filters to organize monitored entities.

  1. Click Add context.
  2. Provide a context name. Add Context Group
  3. On the Filter drop-down list, select options in Classifications, Attributes, or Dimensions to filter the classification.

    Note

    For each selection, you can click on the chip and choose a specific value to further refine the entity group.
  4. On the Group By drop-down list, select options in Classifications, Attributes, and/or Dimensions to organize the entities.
  5. On the State Tree drop-down list, select which value to display in the state tree.
  6. Click Save.

You’ll see a new context group added in the Entity Viewer page. To edit the group, click .

Deep-dive data on an entity Copied

Each tile is colored according to its severity. You can drill-down data to the metrics or attributes level of an entity.

  1. From a context group, hover on an entity tile to see an overview.
  2. Click an entity tile to see a tree view of the data associated with the selected entity.
  3. Expand the tree view and select an item to drill-down data.
  4. In the Metrics, Logs, Attributes, Related Entities, or Activity sections, scroll down to check associated data. You may be able to click on some UI elements to see more information.

Search for entities Copied

Find an entity by searching for names, values, and strings. You can limit or delimit the results using several options.

  1. From the Entity Viewer page, click the search box. The search window appears.
  2. On the Context drop-down list, select your preferred context to search within.
  3. Type your keywords in the search box.

    Note

    To get individual matches with two or more keywords, put your search terms inside quotes (for example, "gateway-nightly").
  4. Click Search descendants if you want to show parent entities with children that match the search criteria. Selecting this option may impact system performance. This option is disabled if no context is selected.
  5. Click Include search matches to conveniently highlight the keywords in the search results.
  6. Click Classified only to get results that have a classification policy.
  7. Choose types in Scope to limit your search (for example, metrics). Each type has a corresponding icon at the beginning of the search result to help you sort the results.
  8. Select whether to include active or inactive entities in Status.
  9. Select which severity levels to include in Severity.
  10. In Classification, choose to search entities with a specific classification.
  11. Click a search result to review the details in tree view.
