Highlights

The main features of this release are listed below. For all the latest highlights, see What's New in Geneos

  • The Gateway Publishing feature allows you to export Gateway data to external systems. In this release, Gateway Publishing feature is enhanced to support user specified formatting to ensure the date/time published by Gateway is in a standard format. This feature is now also supported on Gateway 64 bit running on Solaris x86 platform.
  • Self-Announcing feature allows Netprobes to start up on any hosts and immediately be configured with default monitoring. Supporting variables in Self-Announcing Netprobes gives flexibility for users to simplify their Gateway configuration. Host or application specific information can now be set on the Self-Announcing Netprobe, enabling a single sampler and type configuration to be used across multiple Managed Entities.

New features and fixed issues

These are the new features and issues we have fixed in this release:

Issue type Issue key Release component Release description
Enhancement NPX-903 Gateway, Netprobe, EUEM Netprobe, Webslinger, Licence Daemon, FIX Analyser 2, File Agent Update openssl library bundled in Geneos with backported fixes as originally found in the openssl-1.0.2g-1ubuntu4.5 package.
Bug WEB-466 Web server

This change addresses security vulnerabilities found with activemq and commonsfileupload libraries packaged with Web Dashboard. Changes done were the following:

  • update activemq from 5.3.0 to 5.14.1
  • -update commons-fileupload from 1.3.1 to 1.3.2
Bug WEB-404 Web server Clicking links of a dashboard now open a new tab.
Documentation PLW-737 Netprobe Updated section 2.1.27 regexFilters > regexFilter to last latest revision to remove statement and image about multiple regex filters.
Documentation PLW-736 Netprobe Updated documentation and added overallPacketTransmissionRate, totalKBitTransmissionRate and overallRerequestRate.
Bug PLI-2270 Netprobe Fix for Solaris Plugin crash (segmentation fault) with at least two process plugins running Zone Filter (Selection).
Bug PLI-2282 Netprobe

Add support for a jobname pre-query filtering for IBMi-Job queries if the configuration allows this. This allows a faster query for jobs when the jobname filter is a list of specific or generic job names as described in http://javadoc.midrange.com/jtopen/index.html?com/ibm/as400/access/JobList.html (see section for SELECTION_JOB_NAME). This also prevent having to apply Geneossampler specific filters.

Additional and more verbose IBMi-Job debug logs have also been added.

Bug PLI-2251 Netprobe Memory Pool Fix for Reported FKM Leak/Fragmentation when monitoring high volume Windows Event Logs.
Bug PLI-2247 Netprobe Fix Netprobe crashing when there are many Mibmon samplers with many invalid MIBs in the setup.
Enhancement PLI-2266 Netprobe Toolkit Plugin can now display a more accurate execution duration especially when the actual execution duration of a script is less than a second.
Bug PLI-2284 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor We now distribute Mozilla-signed Firefox add-ons. There should be no need to manually disable the security settings for add-ons in about:config.
Enhancement PLI-2289 Gateway, Netprobe, EUEM Netprobe Resync curl library to use Ubuntu 16.04's curl-7.47.0-1ubuntu2.2 security upgrade package.
Bug PLI-926 Netprobe

Added fix for this issue: X-ping plugin's target host is not updated when the IP of the target host name is changed(via DNS) even if [Check target host has changed IP] option is set.

Behavior after fix: When the [Check target host has changed IP] option is set, X-Ping detects if the underlying IP address of the target host name has changed. This will restart the packet capture engine so X-Ping will continue to ping the correct host.

Enhancement PLD-200 Netprobe Netprobe can now successfully connect to a Sybase DB, with or without password encryption, depending on the Sybase configuration.
Enhancement PLD-196 Netprobe The application name for each SQL-Toolkit sampler can now be set in GSE. If the application name is set, the resulting application name for that sampler will be "<Application Name set in GSE> (listen-port <Netprobe's port number>)". If not set, it will default to "Netprobe (listen-port <Netprobe's port number>)".
Enhancement PLM-302 Netprobe The compat folder has been removed from Linux Netprobe release package since its content (libstdc++.so.6) is already available on our supported Linux versions (RHEL 5, 6, and 7).
Documentation NPX-892 Netprobe Updated files included in component packages and added their respective descriptions.
Enhancement NPX-814 Netprobe, Gateway

Self-announcing Netprobes (SAN) can have types, and managed entities. This story adds the ability to set variables in a similar manner to the way that variables are set on a managed entity for non SAN probes.

The Variable section is not parsed by the probe, it is passed to the Gateway to be checked. This means that any issues are not discover until the probe connects to the Gateway, however this also means that Gateway can add new variable types and the variables can be added to the SAN Netprobes with no update.

Enhancement GWX-2783 Netprobe, Gateway

When processes are launched by Gateway or Netprobe, environment variables whose values have been set in the Netprobe or Gateway are now correctly reflected in the environment of the new process.

For example, if the variable _GATEWAY_NAME is set to "Foo" in the shell before starting a Netprobe, it will be correctly reset by the Netprobe to the name of the connected Gateway and this updated value will be correctly set in the environment of any scripts run by commands, toolkit samplers and so forth. (i.e. Last value set wins).

Enhancement GWX-2782 Gateway

The Gateway REST API now supports two new endpoints:

/rest/commands/all — lists all commands (except any which run on the desktop client)

/rest/commands/available — lists the commands available on a specific target for the user whose credentials are used to make the request.

Enhancement GWX-2755 Gateway Allow the user to set the number of History files that he maintains to zero. This is provided for people who will be using Gateway hooks to manage thier Gateway setup history
Enhancement GWX-2754 Gateway

For dataview data items the value of the item (cell or headline) will be included in the published metadata.

The value field will contain the data "as in" in a field called "cell". Where the value starts with a number it will publish a number field also with the value formatted as a number and if it contains a date it will publish a datetime field with the value in ISO 8601 format.

Enhancement GWX-2753 Gateway

Certain dataviews contain cells where the format of the cell cannot be determined. This may be because the data is generated by a user script, or it may be because a Geneos plugin is extracting data whose format is determied by the enviroment of the server on which the plugin is running.

The standardised formatting tab on samplers allows the user to describe the originating format of variables (cells and headlines). This allows them to be transformed into standardised format. You can also specify which cells in the sampler the format is applied to by using the dataview name and the applicability sections.

Bug GWX-2752 Gateway

The version of Nanomsg (0.5) used by Valo does not null-terminate message buffers. Valo uses status requests to confirm that the Geneos Gateway is running and attempts to fail over to a secondary Gateway if the Gateway rejects a request.

The Nanomsg adapter in Geneos releases 3.7 and 3.8 fails to process requests that are not null-terminated.

This fix creates version 1.3.0 of the Nanomsg adapter which will correctly process such requests.

Enhancement GWX-2751 Gateway On the Solaris x86 64-bit platform, Gateway now supports publishing to Nanomsg and Kafka. The configuration settings and message formats are the same as on the Linux 64-bit platform.
Bug GWX-2750 Gateway The format of the topic string used when publishing metadata messages changed in Geneos 3.7. This change has proved not to be backwards compatible with the Geneos payload parser in Valo 1.2. Version 1.2.0 of the Nanomsg publishing adapter reverts the topic string to the previous format for these messages. Because the publishing adapters are shared objects, the amended version of the adapter can be used with any version of the Gateway from Geneos 3.7.
Bug GWX-2749 Gateway

Trigger name dropped did not match the name of the trigger subsequently created. This causes an issue if trigger to be created exists as it is not dropped prior to creation. This affected the following scripts:

  • resources/databases/mysql/schema-1.7.sql
  • resources/databases/mysql/update-1.6.sql
Bug GWX-2746 Gateway The dropdown listing the include files was incorrectly populated for the /GATEWAY:reloadSetup command. The affect was that it was not possible to select a single include file to reload either via the interface or via actions and scheduled commands.
Enhancement GWX-2748 Gateway Gateway Load Monitoring now includes Gateway plugins: GW Severity Data, GW Valo Stream Data.
Bug GWX-2743 Gateway, Netprobe, EUEM Netprobe, Webslinger, Licence Daemon, Gateway Recorder, FIX Analyser 2, FIle Agent Fixed scenarios where in large user environments Gateway and Netprobe may drop connections.
Enhancement GWX-2741 Gateway

Added "plugin" column to following plugins: * severityData * snoozeData * userAssignmentData:

  • severityData
  • snoozeData
  • userAssignmentData
Bug GWX-2740 Gateway Gateway Sharing now logs an error on the importing Gateway when a connection to an exporting Gateway is rejected due to an authentication failure. The root cause is generally a configuration error, but such errors were not easy to diagnose in previous releases, since the log messages issued by the User Manager were at "INFO" level.
Bug GWX-2734 Gateway Gateway was previously not searching LD_LIBRARY_PATH for Geneos adapters. This required the path to the adapter being set in the publishing section. This in no longer the case. Any adapters located in either LD_LIBRARY_PATH or lib64 will be located by the Gateway without having explicit place the path to the adapter in the publishing configuration section.
Bug GWX-2733 Gateway Actions can again override environment variable generated by a managed entity attribute by using setting a userdata value in a rule. This fixes a regression issue.
Bug GWX-2731 Gateway

When Gateway configuration for Gateway-sql plugin were updated, they would be dropped from any export list and so be unavailable to Gateway sharing. This has now been fixed.

This affected any Gateway-plugin that had settings.

Enhancement GWX-2722 Gateway The filtering for Gateway issue based plugins (SnoozeData, UserAssignmentData, SeverityData and Severity Count) has been improved. It is now possible to use both inclusive and exclusive attribute based filters to give users more control over the data that the plugins will collect.
Bug GWX-2721 Gateway Corrected timezone used for Asia/Colombo.
Bug GWX-2720 Gateway Corrected scenario where target row names containing HTML tags and quotes could would result in info commands not completing.
Bug GWX-2712 Gateway When one Gateway was using the Gateway Load plugin to read a statistics file written by another, the reading Gateway would sometimes read incomplete data. This is now avoided by using a temporary name for the statistics file while it is being written and renaming it after closing it.
Bug GWX-2715 Gateway When /LMSTATS:startLMStatsCollectionForTimePeriod command was wrapped inside a task and launched, the Gateway would crash after the command completed. This had been fixed.
Bug GWX-2700 Gateway, Netprobe, EUEM, Netprobe A number of improvements under the hood to make spawning child processes safer.
Bug GFR-707 Gateway, Netprobe, EUEM Netprobe, Webslinger, Licence Daemon, Gateway Recorder, FIX Analyser 2, File Agent

SSL connections were occasionally dropping on Windows machines when large messages were sent. Geneos components now correctly handle cases where such calls fails due to an asynchronous I/O operation returning less data than expected.

In addition, error reporting on SSL connections has been enhanced to report any additional information available when the OpenSSL function ERR_get_error() returns zero.

Bug GFR-703 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor, Netprobe Upgrade libxslt to 1.1.17.
Bug GFR-702 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor, Gateway, Netprobe Upgrade libxml2 to 2.6.26.
Enhancement GFR-700 Gateway Gateway can now successfully connect to a Sybase DB, with or without password encryption, depending on the Sybase configuration.
Enhancement GFR-694 Gateway, Netprobe, EUEM Netprobe, Webslinger, Licence Daemon, Gateway Recorder, FIX Analyser 2, File Agent All Non-Windows Geneos components using the native logging should log the contents of LD_LIBRARY_PATH at the start of logging.
Bug EXR-250 Express Reports Express reports do not treat deletions as warnings in the reports.
Documentation ACX-4342 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor Fixes for Active Console, Sec. 37.2 ActiveConsole.exe flags table syntax error, i.e., jvmargs, and dashboardDisplayFont.
Bug ACX-4245 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor Digitally-signed Activeconsole and GSE binaries and Activeconsole DLL file.
Enhancement ACX-4149 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor

Removal of unsupported files from Active Console package:

  • ExpressReportsSetupEditor.exe
  • ExpressReportsSetupEditor.gci
  • resources\downloader
  • schema\expressReports.xsd

Last updated: 25 August, 2016

  • Web Services (Web Montage) version GA3.7.0 is available with updated libraries to fix known vulnerabilities. Upgrading to GA3.7 also requires upgrading Open Access to version 2.3.
  • Active Console is updated (GA3.7.1) to fix loading issue when older version of libeay32.dll is present in the system folders.

Highlights

The main features of this release are listed below. For all the latest highlights, see What's New in Geneos

  • The Gateway Publishing feature allows you to export Gateway data to external systems. In this release, GatewayPublishing feature is enhanced to support Apache Kafka messaging system. This will enable you to easily configure Gateways to produce Kafka messages that you can consume into other systems and applications. The data published by the Gateway includes all dataview changes along with severity, snooze and user assignment information.
    • Publishing to Kafka is supported on Linux 64bit version of Gateway. Other Gateway platforms are planned for end of 2016.
    • You may notice increase in Gateway CPU usage as a result of enabling Kafka publishing feature. Our tests have shown around 10 to 20 percent increase in Gateway CPU usage. We recommend you evaluate the impact based on your environment and Gateway configuration before enabling Kafka publishing in production.
  • Geneos is a highly distributed system with many Gateways deployed across teams and regions. Often it is desirable to get visibility across your many hundreds of Gateways so that you can implement processes to help manage your monitored environment. One of the ways this can be achieved is by using Gateway Sharing feature to export summary information from all your hundreds of Gateways and import that into a smaller set of Gateways that a small team can manage without being connected to hundreds of Gateways all the time. This enhancement delivers two key features to enable that.
    • Gateway Severity Data Plugin: Similar to User Assigned and Snooze data plug-ins, this view shows all warning and critical severity items within a Gateway.
    • Ability to connect to source Gateway: Where a user is connected to small set of summary Gateways via Active Console, this enhancement enables them to dynamically connect to the source Gateway in order to investigate any issues.
    • This means you are not always connected to all your hundreds of Gateways, instead you are always connected to your summary Gateways with ability to easily connect to source Gateways when needed.
  • REST service for Gateway Commands:
    • Gateway commands are the primary method of interaction between Gateway and users. Commands are usually invoked by users through the Active Console user interface or scheduled in the Gateway to execute automatically. This enhancement is to allow users to run Gateway commands without having to interact through a Geneos GUI so that for example you could create scripts that can be run to take actions across multiple Gateways.
  • Consume Elektron Pulse data:
    • Reuters RFA adapter for Market Data Monitoring (MDM) to support consuming Elektron Pulse data. This enables users to monitor their Reuters service infrastructure alongside monitoring the health and integrity of the data itself.
    • To consume Elektron Pulse data, you will need an updated enumtype.def from or based on TREP Template version 15.91 or newer. This can be downloaded from Thomson Reuters Customer Zone.

Couple of issues to be aware of when enabling Gateway Kafka publishing feature. These issues are scheduled to be fixed in next release:

  • If working directory of Gateway does not contain lib64/Geneos-adapter-kafka.so, then please add the following to the Gateway configuration: Publishing > Advanced Tab > Additional settings: adapter.library.path=<path to library>.
  • If Gateway is unable to reach the Kafka broker, messages will be buffered by the Kafka adapter. By default, up to 100,000 messages will be buffered. This limit can be altered by setting the following in the Gateway configuration: Publishing > Advanced Tab > Additional settings: kafka.queue.buffering.max.messages=<num of messages>. Once the buffer limit is reached, Gateway will start discarding published messages. Gateway will log error for every message it discards, which can cause Gateway log file to grow. This is generally not an issue in fault tolerant Kafka broker deployment, but users should be aware of this to minimise any impact.

Highlights

The main features of this release are listed below. For all the latest highlights, see What's New in Geneos

  • Active Dashboard Modifiers allow you to create rich dashboard visualisation by linking a data item (cell value, davaview, Managed Entity, etc) to properties of dashboard objects, like fill colour, line thickness, visible boarder and so on. Active Console comes with number of predefined modifiers. It is now possible to easily create, modify, export and import your own custom modifiers to create graphically rich dashboards.
  • Reuters RFA adapter for Market Data Monitoring currently supports subscribing to streaming data. This enhancement adds the ability to subscribe to snapshot data so that intermittent service availability checks (eg - permissioning, load balancing etc) or oneoff data dumps (eg - end of day price) can be implemented.
  • Gateway Setup Editor (GSE) is a standalone application that is normally launched from within your Active Console in a single process. It is possible to configure your Active Console to launch GSE in a separate process so that for example your Active Console is not impacted by any issues in GSE while administering and configuring Gateways. This enhancement enables x-path evaluation when GSE is run as a separate process so that you can now use GSE in standalone mode with full support for x-path evaluation.
  • Added database support for: Mysql 5.7, SAP / Sybase ASE 16, mariaDB 5.5, 10, 10.1, MSSQL Server 2014.
  • Added support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.2.

Highlights

The main features of this release are listed below. For all the latest highlights, see What's New in Geneos

  • Delay rules at Gateway start-up:
    • In a large Gateway setup, the overall time taken for the Gateway to start up can sometimes be reduced by delaying the application of rules.
    • A new rule configuration setting, Rules >startupDelay > interval, has been added, allowing Geneos administrators to specify an interval in seconds between the Gateway becoming active and the rules being applied.
  • Manual Gateway hot-standby failback:
    • In a host-standby Gateway configuration, the default behaviour is for an active secondary Gateway to relinquish control back to primary Gateway as soon as the primary Gateway is up and running. This behaviour can cause disruption if this happens during normal business hours.
    • It is now possible to run Gateways in manual failback mode so that a secondary Gateway does not relinquish control until the "manual failback" command is issued. This allows you to restart your Gateway and transfer control at a convenient time.
  • Path editor to handle complex paths:
    • The Path Editor used by Active Console and Gateway Setup Editor to edit XPaths now supports an 'Expert mode' in which a simple text box replaces the drag-and-drop GUI. This mode is automatically invoked to edit any path which uses syntax that cannot be correctly translated to and from the simplified user readable form used by the drag-and-drop GUI.
    • Evaluation of XPaths is supported in both basic mode and expert mode to help build valid XPaths.

Highlights

The main features of this release are listed below. For all the latest highlights, see What's New in Geneos

  • Geneos integration with ITRS Insights:
    • ITRS Insights is a real-time big data analytics tool built on top of a technology platform called Valo.
    • Integration with Geneos allows users to stream their valuable Geneos data into ITRS Insights for powerful historical and real-time analytics.
    • Integration also allows Gateways to run powerful queries on ITRS Insights, bringing the results back into Geneos for monitoring and alerting. This feature is currently in pilot, aiming to be production ready next release. Enable “Show Pilot Features” in GSE to configure the “Gateway-valoStreamData” plug-in.
  • Gateway enhancements:
    • Enhanced Gateway-SQL plugin that can dynamically allow multiple dataviews to populate a single table. This makes it possible for new dataviews added to a Gateway to be queried by Gateway-SQL plugin without having to change its configuration.
    • New “Show Rule Contention” command that shows where multiple rules are defined against a data item to help debug rule contention. This command will examine all data items below the command target, so this could be done at Gateway level or at a particular dataview level.
    • New “Secure Environment Variables” setting for Gateway commands and Toolkit plugins, allowing users to send encoded secure passwords to Gateway commands and Toolkit scripts.

  • Netprobe enhancements:
    • FKM plugin can now be configured to monitor custom Windows event logs, in addition to Application, Security and System event logs already available.
    • SQL-Toolkit plug-in now supports PL/SQL and Transact-SQL statements.
    • SQL-Toolkit plug-in now supports Windows authentication for MSSQL Server database.

Geneos 3.3.0

Released: 26 November, 2015

Updated: 16 December, 2015

We have made a change to the Geneos version numbering to better align with our release process. Starting from GA3.2.x, our regular releases (about once every 2 months) will increment the middle digit instead of the last digit. For example, GA3.2.0, GA3.3.0. The third digit will be used for ad-hoc fixes planned in-between regular release cycle. This change does not affect the version number format or the schema version compatibility.

Known issue on MS-SQL Server: Please note there is an issue with database schema upgrade script (update-1.6.sql) on MS-SQL Server. We are working to fix this issue. In the meantime, if you are upgrading the database schema on MS-SQL Server. For assistance, please contact ITRS Support.

Geneos 3.2.0

Released: 1 October, 2015

Updated: 15 October, 2015

We discovered an issue (GWX-2655) with GA3.2.0 version of Gateway, and a fix is now available in GA3.2.1 version of Gateway. If you have downloaded GA3.2.0 version of Gateway, we advise you to upgrade to GA3.2.1 version.

Last updated: 22 October, 2015

Web Dashboard version GA3.2.1 is now available including some important fixes including authenticated access to Web Dashboard.

Note: We have made a change to the Geneos version numbering to better align with our release process. Starting from now, our regular releases (about once every 2 months) will increment the middle digit instead of the last digit. For example, GA3.2.0, GA3.3.0. The third digit will be used for ad-hoc fixes planned in-between regular release cycle. This change does not affect the version number format or the schema version compatibility.
