Overview

Geneos release notes contain the list of enhancements of features, and a set of issues fixed in the current release. This page contains release notes for all Geneos 6.x releases.

Note

End of life for 4.x.x is 31 May 2023. If you are using 4.x.x, we advise you to upgrade to the latest version.

Upcoming Geneos release

Geneos follows a two-month release cycle. The next planned release for 6.7.x is January 2024.

Geneos compatibility and lifecycle

The notice of change in the Geneos compatibility identifies the components, plugins, or features that will no longer be supported by ITRS in any future releases.

End of support

The end of support means that the affected component, plugin, or feature is no longer supported and this ends the release of binaries. The table below lists the affected components, plugins, and features:

It displays similar metrics to the Gateway-obcervConnection plugin and is automatically configured on Netprobes with samplers having the publishToObcerv setting, such as Fix Analyser 2.. The GSE schema for self-monitoring has been improved to make it easier to separately enable or disable Gateway and Netprobe self-monitoring.
AA-6799 Gateway, Licence Daemon Geneos components on Redhat 9 now use libnsl2.
AA-6813 Gateway Gateway now always confirms to the Gateway Setup Editor that a setup change has been applied before updating the connected Netprobes.
AA-6816 Gateway Gateway can now use a custom script to authenticate to the HashiCorp Vault. See documentation for an example script.
AA-6820 Gateway The Obcerv Connection sampler is now automatically added to the Netprobe when the probe configuration is linked to a hybrid FKM sampler that publishes log data directly to Obcerv.
AA-6824 Gateway Gateway now handles HashiCorp Vault Enterprise eventual consistency issues by retrying any request for which it receives a 412 status response. It will continue to do this up to the configured validation timeout.
Additionally, Gateway now supports the utilization of HashiCorp Vault Agent by supplying the X-Vault-Request header when making requests.
AA-6830 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor, Web Server Improved password handling in Active Console and Web Dashboard.
AA-6833 Gateway Schema Gateway can now omit server certificate validation when connecting to the HashiCorp Vault.
AA-6837 Gateway The following changes were made in the Obcerv Connection sampler:
  • The Obcerv Connection sampler is automatically included in the Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe whenever the FA2 Netprobe contains a Fix Analyser 2 sampler with the publishToObcerv setting set to true or not configured.
  • It is automatically included in Netprobe if the Netprobe has an FKM sampler with the obcervPublishing setting configured.
AA-6838 Gateway, Netprobe Direct publishing to Obcerv now uses the same filters as Outbound Stream publishing.
AA-6846 Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe The Fix Analyzer Obcerv Publishing feature is no longer in a pilot phase and is now generally available.
AA-6850 Netprobe The following changes were made in the Dynamic Entities Health sampler:
  • By default, both pending entities and accepted entities with no rejected samplers are now excluded in the Entities dataview. A new configuration, entities > showAll, has been added to specify whether these entities should be displayed or not.
  • Streams with no dropped messages are now excluded from the Streams dataview. Similarly, a new configuration, streams > showAll, has been added to specify whether these streams should be displayed or not.
AA-6851 Gateway You can now configure the level of information displayed by the Gateway-managedEntitiesData sampler. It can now display either summary information or both summary and details.
AA-6862 Gateway Helm Chart, Netprobe Helm Chart Containers used by Netprobe and Gateway Helm charts now have limits and requests by default.
AA-6864 Netprobe Helm Chart The storageClassName setting of all PVCs used by the Netprobe Helm chart is now configurable
AA-6865 Schema The default stale data timeout has been increased from 5 minutes to 6 minutes.
AA-6868 Netprobe If a Dynamic Entity has been created but the request has not yet been sent to the Gateway, this entity is now labeled as PENDING instead of UNKNOWN.
AZUREMON-489 Azure Azure EventHub Collector can now extract the primary aggregation type and corresponding units from incoming metrics via the Azure Monitoring API.
COL-9350 Netprobe FKM now supports filenames with more than 300 characters.
COL-11759 Netprobe, Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe, File Agent Geneos components on RHEL 9 now use libnsl2.
COL-11770 Schema, Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe, File Agent TLS connection between File Agent and Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe is now supported.
COL-11783 Netprobe All IBM-i plugins are now able to securely connect to an IBM-i server remotely to collect data.
COL-11804 Collection Agent MongoDB plugin now supports monitoring of Replication Set.
COL-11811 Netprobe The Net-SNMP library has been upgraded to 5.9.4 to address the security vulnerabiity: BSDA-2022-2160.
COL-11825 Netprobe You can now configure the CA certificate for PostgreSQL SSL connections in SQL Toolkit.
COL-11830 Collection Agent MongoDB plugin now supports MongoDB 7.x.
COL-11844 Gateway FKM plugin can now publish directly to Obcerv rather than using the Publisher plugin.
COL-11845 Gateway, Netprobe If an FKM plugin is configured to directly publish FKM data to Obcerv, then all publishing to Obcerv via the Publisher plugin is now disabled. This prevents the publication of duplicate data to Obcerv.
COL-11864 Netprobe Publishing log data to Obcerv through the Publisher plugin has been deprecated. It is now possible to publish FKM plugin log data directly to Obcerv without needing to configure a Publisher plugin.
COL-11877 Netprobe FKM plugin customized messages are now correctly shown in trigger details when using start and end tags.
COL-11898 Netprobe The Netty library has been upgraded to 4.1.100.Final to address the following security vulnerabilities:

VI-9661 Web Server The Spring Security library in the Web Dashboard has been upgraded to 5.8.5 to address the following security vulnerabilities:

VI-9667 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor Active Console can now create historical charts from an Obcerv Platform 2.0 data source.

These are the issues we have fixed in this release:

AA-6808 Netprobe Default throttle period for batching of dynamic objects is now set to 10 seconds.
After a configuration update related to dynamic entities, the next batch of dynamic objects is now sent immediately instead of waiting for the batch timeout period.
AA-6812 Gateway The /PROBE:disassociate command can now be used to remove a Self-Announcing Netprobe from a Gateway when the Netprobe is disconnected, as well as when it is suspended.
AA-6861 Gateway Gateway no longer crashes when refusing license requests for dynamic entities after losing its connection to the Licence Daemon.
AA-6877 Gateway Self-monitoring samplers now always use the default plugin settings for each plugin
COL-6000 Netprobe Single-grouped messages can now correctly show grouped rows when messages are configured using regex capture groups.
COL-9409 Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe The memory protection maximum limit for the Fix Analyser Netprobe has been removed.
COL-11092 Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe, File Agent Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe and File Agent binaries are now supported in RHEL 8 and RHEL 9.
COL-11140 Netprobe Hardware plugin can now accurately acquire Windows OS names.
COL-11883 Netprobe The issue causing Netprobe to consume additional memory resources when using the SQL Toolkit Plugin on Oracle database has been resolved through the upgrade of SQLAPI++ to version 5.2.6.
COL-11884 Netprobe The Oracle database cursor leak bug on the SQL Toolkit plugin has been fixed.
VI-9259 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor Active Console now correctly updates sample time in the Metrics view when it changes.
VI-9521 Web Server The Jetty server version of Web Server is no longer shown in error and response messages.
VI-9577 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor The GSE save button is now enabled after making changes to the Collector custom YAML config.
VI-9623 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor Improved password security for Active Console SSO login and Gateway login.
VI-9628 Gateway Gateway now generates a ticker event for a severity change that causes an item to become unsnoozed, regardless of whether severity changes are configured to be ignored when the item is snoozed.
VI-9640 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor Gateway Setup Editor can now create a new document tab when using a schema version with pre-release information such as -ALPHA.
VI-9660 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor The previous dataview is now being displayed as streaming data restarts to enhance instant visibility.
VI-9664 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor Gateway Setup Editor’s Rule Group now properly renders the default table when Add New is clicked.
VI-9665 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor Gateway Setup Editor YAML editor now displays correctly when using variables while switching from XML to Normal mode.
VI-9684 Active Console, Gateway Setup Editor Historical chart error messages are now shown in a dialog with a text area. This prevents the error dialog from expanding indefinitely.

This reduces the chances of malformed messages causing unpredictable issues such as crashes or sudden disconnections.
AA-6758 Gateway Fixed an issue where Gateway crashes when the connection to the MS SQL Server database was disrupted.
AA-6771 Gateway Self-Announcing Netprobe no longer ends up in an invalid state when there are no configured Managed Entities defined, and a setup modification has been made on the Gateway since the SAN connected.
AA-6798 Netprobe Gateway no longer resends hybrid sampler creation requests if the existing request is still in progress.
AA-6814 Gateway Gateway no longer crashes when an SSO user has a role with no data access permissions.
AA-6815 Netprobe Netprobe no longer enters a deadlock when the Gateway is unresponsive and the Netprobe is communicating with a Collection Agent.
AA-6817 Gateway The list variables defined on samplers no longer force a re-evaluation of the Probe setup and rules associated with the samplers. This update improves setup time when changing the Gateway setup.
COL-11771 Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe, Gateway, Netprobe Netprobe now works properly when processing HTTP chunked transfer encoding payload.

AA-6673 Gateway An improved error message is now displayed when a relative path alias uses a path variable to specify a headline or a column name.
AA-6689 Gateway Dataviews in the Gateway Load plugin are now limited to a configurable number of rows which is set to 200 by default. This avoids severe performance issues in applying rules to large dataviews.
AA-6707 Webslinger The Webslinger setup template now includes a better Obcerv URL example under the SSO Authentication Settings section.
AA-6708 Gateway Helm Chart You can now specify a list of persistentVolumeClaims in the Helm configuration. This requests persistent volumes that can be used across different Gateway releases.
AA-6709 Gateway A new setting has been added to the Gateway Helm configuration that allows users to make their Gateway setup read-only.

AA-6732 Gateway It is now possible to store the Obcerv Connection settings in a setup include file while enabling or disabling them in the main file.
AA-6733 Gateway Samplers, Neprobe Parameters, Runtime Parameters, and Managed Entity Attributes are now republished every hour to Obcerv as Entity Attributes.
AA-6737 Netprobe Netprobe can now display self-monitoring signals generated by collectors in the Collection Agent.
AA-6740 Gateway, Netprobe, Fix Analyser 2 Netprobe Geneos components now limit the size of message batches to 4MB when sending datapoints to Obcerv to avoid triggering a gRPC error.

Note

Single messages exceeding 4MB will still cause an error.
AA-6775 Schema Pilot Feature: The Fix Analyser 2 plugin has the ability to publish data to Obcerv by enabling the publishToObcerv option.

Geneos 6.0.0

Geneos new features and fixes are released on a regular two-monthly release cadence. Over the last two and a half years, we introduced many new features on the Geneos 5.x. We generally bump up the major version every two years, so it is time to move up to Geneos 6.x.

ITRS will continue to support Geneos 5.x at least until the end of 2024 because we recognise that not everyone will be able to upgrade to Geneos 6.x for some months. Currently, there is not yet a fixed end-of-life date for Geneos 5.x.

Note

End of life for 4.x.x is 31 May 2023. If you are using 4.x.x, we advise you to upgrade to the latest version.

AA-6417 Gateway When Gateway validates its setup, it now reports an error for each AES password that cannot be decrypted and a warning for each AES password that can only be decrypted with a key loaded via the -previous-key-file option. Where Gateway uses AES passwords directly, for example, in Obcerv and database logging credentials, it will not attempt to connect if the password cannot be decrypted.
AA-6442 Gateway In addition to the key-file command line option, a new command line option for Gateway -previous-key-file is now supported to facilitate the change of the Gateway AES key. When this option is used, the Gateway will decrypt passwords using the key-file or the previous-key-file, whichever succeeds first. Gateway Setup Editor allows you to migrate passwords encrypted using previous-key-file and re-encrypt them using the new key-file. This makes it easier to change AES key more often to improve security.
AA-6444 Active Console, Gateway Gateway Setup Editor now supports the migration of passwords that are encrypted using previous-key-file and their re-encryption using the new key-file. This makes it easier to change the Gateway AES key more often to improve security.
AA-6445 Gateway, Netprobe, FIX Analyser 2 Netprobe When a sampler setup contains an AES-encrypted password that cannot be decrypted by the Gateway, a parameter is set by the Gateway for the Netprobe to replace that sampler with another one. This new sampler has a dataview containing no rows and a sampling status stating the problem. This prevents the plugin from attempting to use the invalid password, which may cause the Netprobe to be locked out.
AA-6449 Gateway Gateway Setup Editor now displays a warning message when the Data Access field for connecting to Obcerv is not set.
AA-6478 Gateway Collection Agent 3 plugin licensing model now uses the itrsgroup namespace when publishing datapoints. This change will not affect any existing plugin licences in use.
AA-6487 Gateway Gateway now adds a self-monitoring entity with a Dynamic Entity Health plugin to any Netprobe configured with a Dynamic Entity mapping type. This is the default behavior, but it can be disabled in the Operating Environment section in GSE.
AA-6494 Gateway Collection Agent 3.0.0 is now packaged with Netprobe 6.0.0.

COL-415 CPU plugin The Windows CPU plugin has been updated to show correct and more meaningful data.
  • Windows CPU plugin now shows the complete number of CPUs in the dataview and in the output of the Top 20 Processes and All Processes commands.
  • Logical CPU count and NUMA node count have been added to the headlines.
  • The name of each logical CPU row has been changed to the format cpu_<num>_logical#<num> instead of an index number. Additionally, the CPU plugin settings, which were only supported on Solaris, have been deprecated.
HAAW-323 AWS AWS plugin now monitors consumed LCUs of the monitored Network ELBs.
HAAW-347 AWS The Gateway configuration template (aws_mapping.xml), which is packaged in the gateway/templates directory, for AWS monitoring has been updated and is now compatible with AWS plugin 3.0.
